Theatre before and after Strindberg
At the end of 2006, a wide selection of Swedish theatre for the younger
audience was presented as part of the children’s cultural project Small
Feet Go Far. Contemporary circus company Cirkus Cirkör performed “The
Mermaid” together with the Danish theatre company Kaleidoskop at the
Southbank Centre. Swedish author Henning Mankell’s play A Bridge to the
Stars was performed across the UK as part of the National Theatre’s “NT
Connections".
This October, a series of rehearsed readings by young promising European
writers were produced by 2007 Theatre Café, including works by the Swedish
playwrights Klas Abrahamsson and Jonas Hassen Khemiri. The National Theatre
is currently showing the nineteenth century author Victoria Benedictsson’s
play The Enchantment in a new version by Clare Bayley. The play is
practically unknown to a Swedish audience, and has gone down well with both
the London audience as the critics. “A modern classic of the power of erotic
attraction, played with knife edge intensity” ( Sunday Express).
In the near future, Swedish artist, comic strip creator, author and
playwright Joakim Pirinen’s comedy, The Good Family, will be showing at
Royal Court Theatre at the turn of the month. A brief summary of the story:
"The weather is wonderful, the sky is cloudless and Lasse is deliriously
happy. His son is also over the moon, as are his wife and daughter. They are
comfortably off, sexually satisfied, liberated and pretty well perfect.
Everything is wonderful and probably always will be."
